Juniors:
The A team fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw, at home to in-form Holycross, thanks to a last minute equaliser from Youth player, Jay Ryan. Christy Doyle was the other scorer. This could prove to be an invaluable point as the season progresses. This result leaves Newport in joint second and 4 points behind leaders, Athlunkard, who are next week’s opponents.
The C team were at home to Caherconlish in the Open Cup on Sunday morning. This was always going to be a tough game as the visitors are leading Div 2A, which is two divisions above Newport. Newport put in a great shift and were just 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go but two late goals saw Caherconlish advance to the next round on a 4-1 scoreline. Ciarán Braddick was the Newport scorer.
Next Sunday’s junior fixtures.
Junior A, Premier A, Athlunkard Villa A v Newport Town AFC, 10.30am (Lee Estate) Robbie Broe
Junior B, Div 1B, Caherdavin Celtic v Newport Town AFC, 10.30am (Greenhills) Joe Rooney
Junior C, Div 3A, Caledonians B v Newport Town AFC, 2pm (Rathuard) T O’Sullivan
Schoolboys:
Both our competitive sides that were in action last weekend had great wins. The U12B side won 3-2 away to Pike with the goals coming from Will Meehan, Seamie Bridgeman & Conor Bailey. Pike is always a hard place to get a result, so this result was a great reflection of the lads’ efforts. Newport are now top of the table after four games, which is a great start to their season.
The U14s beat Mungret Regional B 3-0 at home in Derryleigh Park thanks to goals from Zack Mooney, Chris O’Connor & Aaron O’Flaherty. This was an excellent display and the result leaves Newport in joint third after four games, with 2 wins, a draw & a defeat.
The U8 Nippers travelled to play Caherdavin, in the non-competitive league, early on Saturday morning and again they had great fun, with some great football to be seen from both sides. Well done to all the players and their coaches.
Next Saturday’s fixtures are;
U9 Red Group, Aisling Annacotty v Newport Town Reds, 9.45am (Newtown Pk) Self-ref.
U9 Green Group, Newport Town AFC Greens v Regional Utd 2, 9.45am (Derryleigh Park) Self-ref.
U11 Red Group, Newport Town AFC Reds v Fairview Rgs 1, 11am (Derryleigh Park) Adam Walsh.
U11 Green Group, Newport Town AFC Greens v Geraldines, 12.30pm (Derryleigh Park) Adam Walsh.
U13 Div 1, Coonagh Utd v Newport Town AFC A, 11am (Coonagh) Pat O’Brien.
U13 Div 2, Newport Town AFC B v Regional Utd C, 2pm (Derryleigh Park) Adam Walsh.
U15 Div 1, Caherconlish v Newport Town, 2pm (Caherconlish) Thomas Joyce.
U7 Newport Nippers:
Training continues every Friday from 6-7pm on the astro-turf in Derryleigh Park for the U7 Nippers. All boys & girls, born in 2014 & 2015 (that are in primary school) are welcome to come along with a parent/guardian. All children must bring their own water bottle (clearly labelled).
Schoolgirls
Our U12 girls were the only schoolgirl side in action, when they welcomed Lough Derg to Derryleigh Park in the Shield Competition. Unfortunately, it was the visitors who ran out 5-2 winners despite a spirited performance from Newport. Fia Linanne & Lilly Allen were the Newport scorers.
None of our schoolgirl sides are in action next weekend.
