Juniors
10 man Newport Town AFC knocked Premier side, Prospect Priory, out of the FAI Junior Cup in a pulsating 4th round game on a 2-1 scoreline after extra-time after the game ended 1-1 in normal time, thanks to goals from Jake Dillon & Brian O’Sullivan. Newport now advance to the last 64 of the national competition and will travel away to Carrig Celtic who ply their trade in the Premier division of the Limerick Desmond League. Click here for match report. In Div 1B, a depleted B team came back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Charleville B. Newport dominated the game but failed to take any chances that came their way and went a goal down in the 60th minute, against the run of play, when they failed to deal with a long kick out from the Charleville keeper. It looked like one of those games, in which despite playing well, they would end up with nothing. However, in the 75th minute, Nathan Hartigan curled a lovely free-kick which hit the underside of the crossbar and off the keeper to get the equaliser for Newport. This was a game that Newport could have won but in the end were happy to take a point. The C team made it 3 wins on the bounce with a 2-1 win at home to Athlunkard Villa C on Sunday morning. The visitors opened the scoring in the first minute but goals from Andrew Kennedy & David Kennedy were enough to ensure that Newport took all 3 points on offer. The U17s were in National Cup action in Derryleigh against Shelbourne and despite taking the lead through Daniel Egan, it was the visitors who scored twice to advance to the next round. Newport pushed Shelbourne all the way and suffered the heartbreak of a penalty miss late in the game and also saw the ball cleared off the line twice to deny them an equaliser.
Next Sunday’s fixtures. Junior A, Premier A v Cappamore, 2pm (Derryleigh Park). Junior B, Div 1B v Cals, 11am (Rathuard). Junior C, Div 3 v Shelbourne, 11am (Derryleigh Park).
Schoolboys
Our U12 (2008) side were the only schoolboys in action over the weekend and suffered a very disappointing penalty shootout defeat in the National Cup after the game ended 1-1 after normal time & extra time. They gave everything they had away to Granagh Utd of the Desmond Premier League, in Round 4 of the Skechers National Cup. Click here for match report.
Schoolgirls
The U16 girls played out a thrilling 4-4 draw at home to BT Harps on Saturday morning and it took a last minute goal from the visitors to deny Newport the win. Hard luck to Shauna Pearson who was on the Munster U15 schoolgirl squad that lost the inter-provincial final to a very strong Leinster side in Dublin on Sunday. It was a great honour for Shauna to be in the squad and by all accounts she played very well. Next weekend’s fixtures are provisional and subject to change. U11 Girls v Borrisokane, 11.30am (Borrisokane). U13 Girls v Ballymackey, 12pm (Ballinree). U15 Girls v Ballymackey, 10am (Derryleigh Park). U18 Girls v BT Harps, 1.30pm (Roscrea Road).
New Club App
We’re delighted to announce the launch of our new dedicated ClubZap phone App from Clubify which greatly improves how we can communicate with our players, managers & supporters. Our club app will provide followers with a means of staying up to date on club News/Fixtures/Results with updates delivered directly to our supporters’ phones via real time notifications. We understand that people nowadays expect club news to be delivered to them rather than having to go and find it, so this is why we have decided to introduce the NTAFC club app. The app will also be fully integrated with our social media channels and new look website (coming soon). ClubZap is very easy to install on your Apple (iOS) or Android device (phone/tablet) and the app can be downloaded from Clubifyapp.com/download
